Many people hold the belief that Creatine increases water retention, thereby contributing to bloating and a watery appearance. However, this is only partly true. While creatine retains water, the water retained is not stored under the skin (subcutaneous) but in muscle (cell volumization). This water retention in muscle is not associated with watery bloated skin, but increased muscle growth instead.
Creatine loading is an often used but unnecessary strategy for taking creatine. It involves taking 20-25g of creatine a day for 5-7 days (loading phase), followed by 5g daily for the next 4 weeks (maintenance phase). This is thought to saturate the muscles with creatine to cause acute increases in strength. However, clinical research has also shown that simply taking 5g a day will result in muscles reaching the same saturation point, albeit at a slower rate. In short, loading does give instantaneous results to strength gains, but in the long run, would make no difference.
